Embassy Adoption Program

In conjunction with the Washington Performing Arts Society and District of Columbia Public Schools, the Embassy Adoption Program is an educational program that pairs embassies with fifth- and sixth-grade classes throughout the D.C. Public School District.

To open the 2010 program, on January 14th, Ambassador and Mrs. Ichiro Fujisaki visted the fifth-grade classes of Orr Elementary School in Washington, D.C. and introduced traditional Japanese games.

Next, students folded Japanese newspaper into kabuto, or samurai helmets, and proceeded to try other traditional Japanese games such as kendama, daruma otoshi, and kamizumo. The visit concluded with a brief introduction to Japanese food consisting of chopstick instruction and the presentation of a variety of norimaki rolls for the students to enjoy.
