About the School Program
Please note the JICC has moved. We are now located at 1150 18th Street NW, Washington, DC.
The JICC School Program is designed to give students a fun and informative introduction to Japanese culture and traditional practices. Since 1981, our multi-faceted program has introduced thousands of elementary (2nd grade and up), middle, and high school students to Japan. We also offer specially designed programs for university students and adult groups upon request.
The JICC brings Japan to students through:
- Video: a captivating introduction to Japan provided by the Japan National Tourism Organization
- PowerPoint: an overview of the country's history, traditions, and everyday life
- Authentic Artifacts: a presentation of a Japanese wedding kimono, authentic dolls, and other objects
Using a hands-on approach to learning, the JICC staff encourages students to:
- Try on yukata (casual cotton kimono) and happi (festival coats)
- Play the taiko drum
- Enjoy traditional games
- Experience authentic origami
- Participate in a simulated family homestay
- Learn simple Japanese phrases
