Information Regarding the Earthquake Centered in the Kumamoto Region

Message from the Embassy:

As you know, Kumamoto Prefecture and the surrounding areas have been affected by a series of severe earthquakes in recent days, which have injured or killed many people, and have displaced over 100,000 residents. The Government of Japan continues to expand relief activities, and extend support to local authorities to deliver food and medical support to affected communities.

We appreciate the many messages of condolence we have received from across the United States, and heartfelt offers of support. The U.S. Forces, Japan have offered support as well, reminding all of us again of the important contributions made by Operation Tomodachi after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the deep ties of friendship between Japan and the United States.

We would also like to extend our condolences to the people of Ecuador who are also responding to an earthquake disaster.

- Tamaki Tsukada, Embassy of Japan Spokesperson
