Embassy of Japan

July 22, 2004

On Thursday, July 22, the House of Representatives passed House Concurrent Resolution 418, recognizing the importance in history of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Japan. The legislation calls for expanded political, economic, strategic, and cultural ties between the Japanese and American people and their respective governments.

Minister Naoyuki Agawa, Press Secretary for the Embassy of Japan, stated that the Embassy appreciates the recognition of the importance of the 150th Anniversary and thanks the House of Representatives for their strong show of support.

The original sponsor of this legislation was Democratic Congressman Tom Lantos of California, the ranking member of the House International Relations Committee. The bill passed unanimously. Speaking in support of his legislation, Congressman Lantos stated that “the United States and Japan have developed a strong, multifaceted relationship based on shared democratic values and mutual interests in Asian and global stability and economic development.”

During his remarks in support of the bill, the Chairman of the House International Relations Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, Congressman Jim Leach of Iowa, stated the following: “As former Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield noted upon assuming the position of the U.S. Ambassador to Tokyo, the U.S.-Japanese relationship is ‘the most important bilateral relationship in the world, bar none.’”
