Japan has provided seamless support for the Tsunami Disaster in the Indian Ocean in areas of financial resources, science and expertise and human resources. Japan never stops moving forward in making its maximum possible effort. Here is a major update for each area.
1. Financial Contribution: Actual Disbursement of Pledged Amount
(1) Country-to-country grant aid
Japan has exchanged notes with respective disaster-hit countries as to non-project grant assistance on January 17, which will enable Japan to provide $146 million to Indonesia, $80 million to Sri Lanka and $20 million to Maldives.

(2) Assistance through International Organizations Japan has already disbursed the pledged amount of $250 million for emergency humanitarian assistance through international organizations, which was the largest amount among donor countries.

2. Establishment of an Ad hoc Office of the Japanese Embassy in Banda Aceh, Indonesia
Japan has decided to establish an ad hoc office of the Japanese Embassy in early February at the earliest in Banda Aceh, in order to assure the acceptance of a Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force and implement Japan’s assistance more smoothly and effectively.

3. “Japan’s Children Support Plan for Tsunami Victims”
Japan will implement the “Japan’s Children Support Plan for Tsunami Victims,” focusing on both child protection, including anti-human trafficking measures and child survival, including measures against infectious diseases.

4. Measures taken by Japanese NGOs The Japan Platform (JPF), which is an emergency humanitarian assistance organization established among Japanese NGOs, economic circles and the government, has decided to provide emergency humanitarian aid worth approximately $3 million through the six organizations under the JPF.
