The Ministerial Conference on the 3R Initiative was held in Tokyo from April 28 to 30, hosted by the Minister of the Environment. Ministers from 20 countries, including the G8 countries, participated in the conference, and developed methods to internationally promote the 3R Initiative, which is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Out of the meeting, came the chairman’s summary, which calls for the promotion of the 3R Initiative with 3R visions and strategies specifically set up for each country, the reduction of barriers to the international flow of 3R related goods and materials, cooperation between developed and developing countries, cooperation among various stakeholders, and the promotion of scientific technology adaptable to the 3R with international cooperation.
It was also agreed that the result of this Ministerial conference would be reported to the G8 Gleneagles Summit in July 2005, and to hold a meeting at a senior official level as a follow-up to the 3R Initiative by the spring of 2006.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi announced “ Japan’s Action Plan to promote internationally the establishment of a Sound Material-Cycle Society through the 3R Initiative.”
