The Government of Japan has decided to contribute half a million dollars to the World Food Programme (WFP) to assist its emergency project in Niger to distribute food, taking account of Niger's food shortage caused by drought and a plague of desert locusts, and the worsening humanitarian situation.
This contribution will be made in response to WFP's request to assist Niger and the international community's request to extend emergency humanitarian assistance to Niger triggered by a U.N. flash appeal, etc.
The money contributed will be used to purchase salt and sugar for use in the emergency food distribution project and in a project to provide hospitals with nutritional supplements, thus assisting, in particular, the socially weak including women and children, and undernourished persons.
