Telephone Conversation between Koizumi and Bush

President Bush called Prime Minister Koizumi on September 13 at 7:30 AM (EDT) and the two talked by phone for about 8 minutes. A gist of their exchange follows.

1. President Bush congratulated the Prime Minister for his big victory in the elections, and he expressed his admiration for his courage, strong campaign and tremendous victory as well as his respect for the leadership of the Prime Minister.

2. The Prime Minister in turn expressed his respect for the leadership the President exhibited in dealing with the damage from the hurricane, and in addition to expressing his condolences for the victims, he stated that Japan was prepared to extend all possible support and, to this end, would like to make close working level contacts among the agencies involved.

3. President Bush thanked the Prime Minister for his warm words.

4. The two leaders agreed to continue to closely cooperate with each other, strengthen Japan-U.S. relations, and together handle the various problems facing international society.
