October 14, 2005

The equipment donation ceremony to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) for material cooperation will take place in Mombasa, Kenya, on October 19 (Wed) at 10:00 local time (Japan time: 16:00) under the auspices of the UNMIS. Japan made a cabinet decision on July 29 (Fri) to donate 27 four-wheeled vehicles, 60 landmine detection devices and 20 large tents to the UNMIS, and these items will be handed over from the Government of Japan to the UNMIS at the ceremony attended by representatives from the UNMIS, the Government of Japan including Mr. Satoru Miyamura, Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, and the Cabinet Office, as well as the Government of Kenya.

While Japan has extended material cooperation based on the International Peace Cooperation Law 15 times so far, including the present donation, this is the first time for Japan to donate vehicles and landmine detection devices.

In the wake of the domestic conflict which continued for more than 20 years, a Comprehensive Peace Agreement was reached in Sudan in January this year, followed by the establishment of the UNMIS in March. The UNMIS is preparing to begin full-scale activities. The materials that Japan is going to provide to the United Nations will be used mainly for the activities of the African troops (Kenyan and Zambian) participating in the UNMIS.

Prior to the ceremony, Mr. Yusuke Kudo, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was recruited by the UNMIS (for the Unified Mission Analysis Center ) and has already taken up his new post, initially slated for six months, from October this year. The Government of Japan hopes that such assistance for establishing peace, based on the ownership of African countries, will help the peace process in Sudan.
