1. On the 25th of October (Tuesday), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance totaling approximately $2.8 million (approximately 310 million yen), through the Trust Fund for Human Security to a project entitled "Capacity Building for African Union Forces in Darfur" that will be implemented by United Nations Agencies (UNDP, UNFPA, UNMIS-HR, OHCHR and UNICEF) in Sudan.
2. This project focuses on improving the human rights situation and empowering local people and internally displaced persons (IDPs), including women, children and the elderly, in North, West and South Darfur, who are facing various threats as a result of the internal conflict in the region. These include, but are not limited to, attack by armed groups, sexual exploitation, plundering and restrictions on their freedom of movement. This project will provide training on international humanitarian and human rights law to the troops of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) currently deployed in Darfur for protecting the local people and the IDPs. The objective of the training is to establish better norms of actions amongst these troops.
3. By improving the norms of actions, this project is expected to enhance the credibility of the AMIS Forces among the local people and the IDPs in the Darfur region, thereby ensuring the latter's safety and empowerment.

The Trust Fund for Human Security was established in the United Nations Secretariat in March 1999 at the initiative of the Government of Japan. Since then, total contributions have reached approximately $256 million. The Trust Fund has supported projects from more than 130 UN agencies, each one addressing various threats to human life, livelihood and dignity, from the perspective of human security.
