Embassy of Japan

October 25, 2005

The Japan-U.S. Strategic Dialogue at the Senior Officials' Level was held from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on October 23 (Sun) at Iikura House of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting was attended on the Japanese side by Mr. Tsuneo Nishida, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, and other officials and on the U.S. side by Mr. R. Nicholas Burns, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and other officials.

At the meeting, views were exchanged on the situation in the Asia Pacific region. Discussions were held from the viewpoint of how Japan and the U.S. should address the issues facing the region and the world, together with countries concerned such as China, India, Russia, and the ASEAN, and what roles Japan and the U.S. can play in that effort.

At the Dialogue, the participants reconfirmed the importance of continuing this Dialogue on various challenges facing the international community from a medium- to long-term perspective, under the concept of "Japan-U.S. Alliance in the global context." Both sides agreed to coordinate their schedules for future meetings of the Japan-U.S. Strategic Dialogues, both at the ministerial and senior officials' levels.
