Address by Japanese Mister for Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura “Global Health and Japan’s Foreign Policy –From Okinawa to Toyako-”

On November 25, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura delivered a policy speech to the International Symposium “People at the Center -Reorienting Health Care in the 21st Century” hosted by the World Health Organization, Regional Office for the Western Pacific. With two major international conferences to be hosted by Japan next year in mind, the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) and the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, Minister Koumura addressed that Japan would take up and call for a stronger engagement of the international community in Global Health, an issue that humanity cannot evade in its progress towards the future. Minister Koumura shared his views on what the international community should strive for in the field of Global Health and the role of Japan’s diplomacy.

 

 

Minister Koumura emphasized that next year, the mid-point for the achievement of Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015, Japan would take up the issue of health in Africa at the TICAD IV and the wider issue of Global Health at the G8 Summit. He highlighted that the objective would be to develop a common framework for action shared by the international community and called for the participation and cooperation of all stakeholders including national governments, international organizations, the business community, academia and civil society.
