On the Announcement by President Bush on Significant Reduction in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Stockpile

On December 19, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura issued the following statement welcoming the announcement by President Bush on significant reduction in the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.

 

 

On December 18 (Japan time 19), President Bush announced that he had approved a significant reduction in the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile in consistent with its commitment to its allies. Japan welcomes the U.S. announcement for nuclear disarmament and highly values these efforts as a new step for further nuclear disarmament.

 

 

Japan has been calling for further nuclear disarmament of the U.S. and Russia in  the resolution on nuclear disarmament (“Renewed determination towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons”) it has been submitting to the United Nations General Assembly. Japan hopes that this decision made by the United States will have a good effect on the global promotion of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
