Dispatch of Self-Defense Force Personnel to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) Headquarters

  On October 3 (Fri), the Cabinet made a decision to dispatch two members of the Self-Defense Forces to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) Headquarters, on the basis of the International Peace Cooperation Law.

 

  

  1. The Government of Japan will dispatch a staff officer (unarmed) each to the following posts at the UNMIS Headquarters in Khartoum. The timing of their dispatch will be in mid or late October.

 

  

 

  (1) Staff officer in the Logistics Planning Office, Force Headquarters, in charge of liaison within the UNMIS concerned with logistics needs for military component in general.

 

  (2) Staff officer/ Data Base Manager in the Joint Mission Analysis Cell under the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, in charge of database management.

 

2. This will be the first case of a personnel dispatch to the UNMIS under the International Peace Cooperation Law. As a responsible member of the international community, Japan will contribute to the Sudan peace process and to further strengthening of bilateral relations by this dispatch. In addition, the Mission is expected to make an important contribution to the peace and stability of Africa as a whole and is thus considered significant. (END)
