Spouse of a Japanese national, a child of a Japanese national by birth or those adopted by a Japanese national in accordance with the provisions of Article 817-2 of the Civil Code

 

APPLICATION FILED WITH CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY

  1. Applicant's valid passport, properly signed by bearer
  2. VISA APPLICATION FORM TO ENTER JAPAN (available here), completely filled out and signed by the applicant
  3. One photograph (2"x 2") attached to application form
  4. Original "Certificate of Eligibility" from the Ministry of Justice in Japan and one photocopy (For instructions for obtaining the Certificate of Eligibility, have your Sponsor in Japan refer to www.immi-moj.go.jp.)

*Also, please be certain to remember that you must travel to Japan within THREE MONTHS of the issue date noted on your Certificate of Eligibility, regardless of any time limits noted on the actual visa you receive.

  1. Applicant's valid passport, properly signed by bearer
  2. VISA APPLICATION FORM TO ENTER JAPAN (available here), completely filled out and signed by the applicant
  3. One photograph (2" x 2") attached to application form

    Additional documents are required based on the status of the applicant:

     

    Spouse of a Japanese National

    1. Japanese family register (Koseki Tohon) certifying the fact of marriage
    2. Other documents required:
      1. In the case that Japanese spouse is currently residing and employed in Japan:
        • A letter of guarantee from Japanese spouse
        • Japanese spouse's Certificate of Employment and Certificate of Tax Payment
        • Japanese spouse's Resident's Card (Jumin-hyo)
      2. In the case that Japanese spouse is currently residing in Japan but not employed:
        • A letter of guarantee from Japanese guarantor residing in Japan
        • Japanese guarantor's Certificate of Employment and Certificate of Tax Payment
        • Japanese spouse's Resident's Card (Jumin-hyo)
      3. In the case that Japanese spouse is currently residing in the U.S.:
        • A letter of guarantee from Japanese guarantor residing in Japan
        • Japanese guarantor's Certificate of Employment and Certificate of Tax Payment
        • Japanese guarantor's Resident's Card (Jumin-hyo)

     

    A Child of a Japanese National by birth or those adopted by a Japanese national in accordance with the provisions of Article 817-2 of the Civil Code

    1. Documents certifying the parent-child relationship with a Japanese national
      • Japanese family register (Koseki Tohon)
      • Applicant's certificate of birth
      • Parent's marriage certificate, acknowledgement of paternity, certificate of special adoption (if relevant)
    2. Materials certifying the applicant's financial stability
      • Applicant's, or his/her parent's employment verification letter
      • Applicant's, or his/her parent's Certificate of Employment and Certificate of Tax Payment
    3. A letter of guarantee from Japanese guarantor residing in Japan

 

The Embassy of Japan reserves the right to request additional documents if deemed necessary.

 

The Embassy of Japan will not make copies, if you need original documents, please bring the original and one copy.

 

Please allow at least four business days to have your application reviewed. (Cases without the Certificate of Eligibility may take a few months.)
