SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Over the course of his career at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Michael M. Gottesman has played a crucial role in supporting Japanese researchers at NIH to fulfill their potential by offering them advice and guidance as their mentor.

His outstanding efforts to support a fellowship program to continuously accept young Japanese researchers to work at NIH as well as his participation in numerous symposiums related to U.S.-Japan research cooperation have led to the globalization of Japanese researchers’ communities.

Furthermore, after Japan was hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and by the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016, Dr. Gottesman, in cooperation with the Japanese researchers at NIH, led efforts to help with the continuation of research activities initiated in the affected areas. He provided various forms of support including temporarily accepting researchers whose research facilities were damaged by the quakes to NIH.
