2017 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
The Honorable Stephen J. Hadley

 

On November 3rd, 2017 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2017 Autumn Imperial Decorations. The Honorable Stephen J. Hadley is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening the relationship in the field of security between Japan and the United States, he will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

The Honorable Stephen J. Hadley worked as the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from 2005 to 2009 and made significant contributions to further deepening and strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance. In this capacity, he served as a person in charge of managing the alliance at the working level and conducted a series of consultations with his Japanese counterparts, including the Security Consultative Committee (“2+2”) which dealt with various matters such as the roles, missions, and capabilities of Japan and the U.S., as well as the review of the posture of U.S. forces in Japan.

Furthermore, after he retired as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, The Honorable Hadley has been actively advocating the importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance as well as the importance of Asia as a region.
