JICC POP-UPS AT DC PUBLIC LIBRARIES
The JICC is hosting cultural programs at libraries throughout the District during the month of May. These programs provide children and teens the opportunity to engage with Japanese culture in their own neighborhoods!
Spots are limited and will be accepted on first-come-first-serve basis. Registration for each event can be found in the links below each program description. Please contact your nearest participating location for more details!

KAMISHIBAI STORY TIME
(Kindergarten & Elementary Age)
Experience Japanese paper theater with our kamishibai story sessions. Choose from a variety of stories on Japanese folklore and modern traditions, and pair it with an origami craft activity!
RUBBER STAMP CARVING
(High School Age)
Discover the significance of stamps in Japanese culture! From traditional woodblock techniques used to create ukiyo-e prints to personal seals (hanko) used in daily life, participants will explore the importance of these tools. Following the lesson, participants will use linocut tools to create their own rubber stamps and art prints.
MAKE YOUR OWN MANGA!
(Middle & High School Age)
Explore the art of manga (Japanese comics) and the role of onomatopoeia in bringing stories to life! Participants will discover how sound effects enhance storytelling and gain insight into Japanese language and phrases. Following the lesson, students will apply their new knowledge to create their own page of manga.
