JICC POP-UPS AT DC PUBLIC LIBRARIES
The JICC is hosting cultural programs at libraries throughout the District during the month of May to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month. These programs provide library communities the opportunity to engage with Japanese culture in their own neighborhoods!
Spots are limited and reservations will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Registration for each event can be accessed via the DCPL Events page. Please contact your nearest participating location for more information!

KAMISHIBAI STORY TIME
(Kindergarten & Elementary Students)
Experience Japanese paper theater with our kamishibai story time. Enjoy traditional Japanese folktales followed by an origami craft activity!
RUBBER STAMP CARVING
(High School Age+)
Discover the significance of stamps in Japanese culture, from traditional woodblock prints to personal seals (hanko). Following an introduction to the history of stamps and their techniques, participants will use linocut tools to create their own rubber stamps and art prints.
MAKE YOUR OWN MANGA!
(Middle School Students+)
Explore the art of manga (Japanese comics) and the role of onomatopoeia in bringing stories to life! Discover how sound effects enhance storytelling and gain an insight into Japanese language. Following an introduction to the art of manga, participants will apply their new knowledge to create a one-page manga.
SUMINAGASHI
(Middle School Students+)
Learn about the art of Japanese water marbling (suminagashi). In this hands-on program, participants will explore the origins of water marbling in Japan and create their own designs on delicate hanshi paper.
ORIGAMI
(All Ages)
Learn about the origins and techniques of origami in this interactive workshop! Following an introduction to the art of paper folding in Japan, participants can try their hand at several shapes, from a simple samurai helmet to a beautiful crane.
