FEATURED WORKSHOP
FUROSHIKI WORKSHOP | FOLD, WRAP, CARRY
In line with our current exhibition, join us for a workshop exploring the philosophy of mottainai (もったいない; waste-not, want-not) through the art of furoshiki (風呂敷; square wrapping cloths). In this workshop, participants will learn about the history of furoshiki and how to wrap various objects sustainably using traditional and upcycled fabrics.
Cloth has been used in Japan to wrap and protect valuables since the Nara period (710-794), and today, this ancient tradition offers an elegant solution to sustainable living. Furoshiki wrappings are not only beautiful but reusable and reflect the Japanese principle of mottainai, a respect for materials and regret for wasteful behavior.
This workshop complements the sustainable creative practice highlighted in our latest exhibition, Shigeru Ban: Shaping Sanctuaries. We invite participants to find inspiration in Shigeru Ban’s contemporary architecture and Japan’s ancient traditions in this interactive workshop. In the spirit of mottainai, we also encourage participants to bring their own square fabrics to use as furoshiki!
