2015 Fall Conferment of Decoration
The Honorable Richard Lee Armitage

 

On November 3rd, 2015 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2015 Fall Imperial Decorations. The Honorable Richard Lee Armitage is one of the 89 foreign recipients and he received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of his contributions to promoting friendly relations and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

Ambassador Armitage contributed to the strengthening of Japan-US bilateral relations through his capacity as Deputy Secretary of State, Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense. As Deputy Secretary of State, Ambassador Armitage facilitated high level dialogues during challenging times. Also, during his tenure in the Department of Defense, he made outstanding contributions in deepening the defense cooperation between the two countries. In addition, Ambassador Armitage has supported further development of the Japan-US alliance through his policy advisory work such as the issuance of the "Armitage-Nye Report".
