On November 3rd, 2016 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2016 Fall Imperial Decorations. Dr. John J. Hamre is among this year’s foreign recipients, and in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening the relationship and friendship between Japan and the United States of America, he will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
Dr. John J. Hamre worked as Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1997 to 2000 where he contributed to strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance by exerting strong leadership in such matters as the revision and implementation of the Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation. Furthermore, since he assumed his position as President and CEO of the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in 2000, he has actively advocated the importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance, enhanced people-to-people exchange between Japan and the U.S., and made various policy proposals to the U.S. government on Japan-U.S. relations. Through such activities, Dr. Hamre has made a significant contribution to strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance as well as cultivating public understanding of Japan.
