2016 Spring Conferment of Decoration
The Honorable Richard Andrew Meserve

 

On April 29th, 2016 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2016 Spring Imperial Decorations. The Honorable Richard Andrew Meserve is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening science and technology relations between Japan and the United States of America, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

The Honorable Richard Andrew Meserve has played an important role in the nuclear community both in the United States and throughout the world in his roles as former Chairman of the NRC and as Chairman of the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He has made outstanding contributions towards the improvement of nuclear safety in Japan particularly since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in 2011. He demonstrated his knowledge and experience of nuclear safety issues as the International Advisory Expert of the Investigation Committee on the Accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, as a witness of the National Diet of the Japan Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission, as an External Advisor to the NRA, and as the Executive Advisor to the NRRC at the CRIEPI.
