2017 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
Dr. Condoleezza Rice

 

On November 3, 2017 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2017 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Dr. Condoleezza Rice is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of her contributions towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the United States, she will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

Dr. Condoleezza Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States from January 2005 to 2009, the first African American woman to hold the post. She also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) from January 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position. As Secretary of State, Dr. Rice played an important role in strengthening the Japan-U.S. relationship, including launching the U.S.-Japan Development Alliance and implementing the meeting between President Bush and the families of victims kidnapped by North Korea.
