2018 Spring Conferment of Decoration
Secretary Madeleine Korbel Albright

 

On April 29, 2018 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2018 Spring Imperial Decorations. Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Korbel Albright is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of her contributions towards strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and the United States of America, she will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

Secretary Albright was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States. In 1997, she was named the first female Secretary of State and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. From 1993 to 1997, Secretary Albright served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was a member of the President’s Cabinet. As Secretary of State, Secretary Albright played an important role in strengthening the Japan-U.S. relationship, including establishing a closer Japan-U.S. alliance with her strong leadership and deep understanding of the importance of the alliance.
