2018 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
The Honorable Richard B. Cheney

On November 3, 2018 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2018 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Former U.S. Vice President Richard B. Cheney is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the relationship and friendship between Japan and the United States, he will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Mr. Cheney served as Secretary of Defense of the United States from 1989 to 1993 and as Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009. As Secretary of Defense, he contributed to maintaining and strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance in the aftermath of the Cold War. In addition, as Vice President, he strengthened Japan-U.S. cooperation on global issues as well as supported the close relationship between Japan and the United States.
