2018 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
Dr. Kevin David Crowley

 

On November 3, 2018 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2018 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Dr. Kevin David Crowley is among this year’s recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards strengthening the relationship between Japan and the United States of America in the nuclear field, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

As Senior Board Director of the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Dr. Crowley served as the study director responsible for the research activities on the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident in March 2011, which were initiated by a request from Congress after the accident. He organized a research committee consisting of U.S. experts and compiled a report titled “Lessons Learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident for Improving Safety of U.S. Nuclear Plants.” The committee provided detailed and precise scientific information on the situation of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the accident. This has led to promoting a better understanding of nuclear safety and security as well as to a strengthening of standards not only in Japan but also in many other countries.

 

Dr. Crowley has also provided scientific advice for research activities conducted by the Radiation Effects Research Foundation which was established with the support of both the Japanese and the U.S. Government and improved public understanding of the effects of radiation. Dr. Crowley also contributed to deepening the mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S. in terms of nuclear energy and society by giving lectures to the public.
