On April 29, 2018 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2018 Spring Imperial Decorations. The Honorable William Flynn Martin is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening nuclear cooperation between Japan and the United States of America, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
The Honorable William Flynn Martin served as Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan for National Security Affairs, Executive Secretary of the National Security Council in the West Wing of the White House and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Energy in the Reagan Administration. Subsequently, he continued his distinguished career, occupying high level positions within the U.S. government. As Deputy Secretary of the Department of Energy, the Honorable William Flynn Martin was engaged in negotiations of the Japan-U.S. Nuclear Cooperation Agreement during which he testified before Congress in support of the Agreement and laid the groundwork for the current structure of the Japan-U.S. nuclear energy cooperation. He has continued to play a crucial role in the promotion of Japan-U.S. nuclear cooperation and energy security and has contributed greatly to both countries’ mutual understanding by organizing events such as the Santa Fe Seminar Series Program which regularly brings together experts in the field of nuclear energy.
