2019 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
Mr. Richard J. K. Stratford

 

On November 3, 2019 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2019 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Former Director of Office of Nuclear Energy, Safety & Security at U.S. Department of State, Mr. Richard J.K. Stratford is among this year’s foreign recipients, and in recognition of his contributions towards strengthening nuclear cooperation between Japan and the United States of America, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 

Mr. Richard J.K. Stratford served in nuclear energy, safety and security affairs at U.S. Department of State for more than 30 years. As Director of Office of Nuclear Energy, Safety & Security at U.S. Department of State, he played an important role in strengthening nuclear cooperation between Japan and the United States of America through implementing the nuclear cooperation agreement between Japan and the United States of America in a consistent and fair manner. As a chair of OECD/NEA steering committee for Nuclear Energy from 2006 to 2014, he also promoted the international community’s understanding of the Japanese nuclear energy situation following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.
