On August 24, 2013, Ambassador Sasae and Mrs. Sasae met with Robert Griffin III, quarterback for the Washington Redskins, to wish him luck in the upcoming NFL season.
Robert Griffin III was born in Okinawa, Japan and lived there until the age of three. Both his father and his mother, Robert Jr. and Jacqueline, are retired US Army sergeants and were stationed in Okinawa at the time.
During the brief meeting Ambassador Sasae invited Robert Griffin III to once again visit Okinawa, and expressed his hope that Robert Griffin III would serve as a bridge between Japan and the United States.
Ambassador Sasae and Mrs. Sasae also met with the family of Robert Griffin III, retired Washington Redskins Quarterback Joe Theismann, and Washington Redskins Cheerleader Masako Morishita.
Masako Morishita is the third Japanese woman to become a cheerleader for the Washington Redskins. She was choosen as one of fifteen rookie cheerleaders out of almost 300 competitors at the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders auditions in April 2013.
