2020 Spring Conferment of Decoration
The Honorable Daniel B. Poneman

 On April 29, 2020 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2020 Spring Imperial Decorations. Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel B. Poneman is among this year’s foreign recipients, and in recognition of his contributions towards enhancing the relationship between Japan and the United States of America in the energy sector, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

 The honorable Daniel B. Poneman served as the Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States from 2009 to 2014. As Deputy Secretary of Energy, he played an important role in enhancing the Japan-U.S. relationship in the energy sector. He led the discussion on bilateral civil nuclear cooperation through his role as the Co-chair of the U.S.-Japan Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation from its establishment in 2012. Also, he promoted U.S. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) exports to Japan during his service.
