2021 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
the Honorable David A. Gross On November 3, 2021 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2021 Autumn Imperial Decorations. The Honorable David A. Gross, the former US Ambassador and US Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy, is among this year’s foreign recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards strengthening the relationship between Japan and the United States of America in information and communications policy, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
Over his career, including approximately 7 years of service as an Ambassador at the Department of State, the Honorable David A. Gross engaged in bilateral dialogues regarding policy coordination between Japan and the United States in the area of information and communications technologies, and played an important role in developing strong relationships between our countries. And on many occasions, including the UN’s World Summit on the Information Society in 2003 and 2005, he continuously upheld the shared value of a free and open Internet, which contributed not only to furthering the interests of our two nations, but also to the promotion of policies benefiting the global society. Ambassador Gross is now a law partner with the Washington, DC firm Wiley Rein, LLP. This is yet another opportunity to reaffirm the significance of our alliance, keeping in mind that international collaboration has never been more important in the area of information and communications. We have benefited greatly from the Honorable David A. Gross’s friendship with Japan, and wish to extend our deepest gratitude and genuine pleasure on this wonderful occasion. # # #
