2021 Autumn Conferment of Decoration
Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Brad Roberts

On November 3, 2021, the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2021 Autumn Imperial Decorations. Among the recipients is former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Brad Roberts, who will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, in recognition of his many years of service in strengthening the strategic partnership between Japan and the United States.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

As Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy, Mr. Roberts provided strong leadership in improving mutual understanding between the two countries on extended deterrence, one of the cornerstones of the U.S.-Japan alliance, including organizing the U.S.-Japan Extended Deterrence Talks. As a researcher, he has also played an important role in strengthening our ties over the years by helping to deepen the understanding of defense policy and the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance in both countries.

The awarding of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon to Mr. Roberts is a unique opportunity to reaffirm the significance of the U.S.-Japan alliance, which he and others in both countries have long worked to deepen. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Roberts for his contribution to the U.S.-Japan alliance and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.
