Ambassador David B. Shear

On November 3, 2022 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2022 Autumn Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with Ambassador David B. Shear, being one of the recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards promoting cooperation between Japan and the United States on foreign policy and national defense, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Ambassador David B. Shear played an important role in promoting cooperation between Japan and the U.S. on foreign policy and national defense for over 30 years. From 2009 to 2011, Ambassador Shear was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and contributed to strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two countries. He was Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asia-Pacific Security Affairs from 2014 to 2017, during which he promoted the strengthening of the national security and defense cooperation between Japan and the U.S. Even after concluding his diplomatic career, through his leadership as the Chairman of the National Association of Japan-America Societies, he made significant contributions to the mutual understanding between the two countries at the grassroots level.
