On November 3, 2022 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2022 Autumn Conferment of Decorations, with Mrs. Akiko Keene, being one of the recipients. In recognition of her contributions towards promoting friendship between Japan and the United States and introducing Japanese culture, she will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Akiko Keene, Honorary Chair for International Affairs of the National Conference of State Societies, has been involved in the Cherry Blossom Princess Education and Cultural Exchange Program for over 40 years, and has long contributed to the friendship between Japan and the United States. In addition, Keene opened a doll-making class at her Maryland home in 1979, and as an instructor has taught more than 1,000 students the art of making Japanese dolls. This has contributed to the strengthening of friendly relations between Japan and the United States by introducing Japanese culture through this art form.
