On November 3, 2023 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2023 Autumn Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with Thomas Andrew Daschle, Former Senate Majority and Minority Leader, being one of the recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the United States, he will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Since his election to the Senate in 1987, particularly during the time when he served as Majority and Minority Leader of the Senate from 1995 to 2005, Mr. Daschle contributed to strengthening Japan-U.S. relations including through leading a bipartisan delegation of Senators to Japan to build close ties between Japanese parliamentary members and U.S. Senators. Even after his retirement from the Senate, he has helped promote understanding of Japan-U.S. relations in the U.S. Congress and among the public to build a strong Japan-U.S. relationship.
