On April 29, 2023 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2023 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with Dr. Anthony Stephen Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, being one of the recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards promoting cooperation in the field of medical science and strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and the United States, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.

Dr. Fauci, as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, made significant contributions to the promotion and development of the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program, which has continued for more than 50 years. He also contributed to the strengthening of the US-Japan relations such as by promoting the US-Japan Biodefense Program.
