2024 Spring Conferment of Decoration
Former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Ruth Sherman On April 29, 2024 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2024 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with Wendy Ruth Sherman, Former Deputy Secretary of State, being one of the recipients. In recognition of her contributions towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the United States, she will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
Facing an increasingly severe security environment in East Asia, Ambassador Sherman led the US government’s diplomatic efforts in the Indo-Pacific region from her appointment as Deputy Secretary of State in 2021 until her retirement in 2023. She has made significant contributions to strengthening Japan-US relations, including efforts to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific. Prior to her appointment as Deputy Secretary of State, she served in various positions, including Counselor of the Department of State and Under Secretary of State. Throughout her career in the US government, she has worked to maintain and strengthen the international order that contributes to the security of Japan. # # #
