2025 Spring Conferment of Decoration
Former U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman On April 29, 2025 (Japan time), the Government of Japan announced the 2025 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with former U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman being one of the recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and the United States in the field of economy, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
Ambassador Froman served as the United States Trade Representative under the second Obama administration from 2013 to January 2017, where he promoted a rules-based, international and open trade system, and made significant contributions to Japan's participation in and conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. He also served as a Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) from January 2017, and since assuming the position of CFR President in March 2023, he has visited Japan many times and contributed to promoting intellectual exchange between Japan and the United States by utilizing his wide-ranging network of contacts with Japanese government officials, members of Parliament, experts, media personnel, and others to exchange views. # # #
