On April 29, 2026 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, with David H. Berger, Former Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, being one of the recipients. In recognition of his contributions towards strengthening relations between Japan and the United States in the area of defense, he will receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

For approximately four years, as Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, General (Ret) Berger consistently provided active cooperation and support to the Japan Ministry of Defense and the Japan Self-Defense Forces with a deep understanding of our nation's peace and security. He made significant contributions to Japan-U.S. friendship and goodwill, the organization of and participation in various conferences, Japan's security and defense, and the enhancement and development of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). In particular, he promoted various measures such as strengthening cooperation between the U.S. Marine Corps and the JGSDF and enhancing the amphibious capabilities of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, thereby contributing to the development of defense capabilities of the Ministry of Defense and the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
