On April 29, 2026 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals. Among those honored is Gerald Hiroshi Yamada, Former President of the Japanese American Veterans Association. In recognition of his contributions to improving the social status of Japanese Americans and promoting friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.

SUMMARY OF CONTRIBUTIONS

As President of the Japanese American Veterans Association, Mr. Yamada led the establishment of the “Day of Affirmation” wreath‑laying ceremony at the National World War II Memorial. This ceremony honors the service and achievements of Japanese American soldiers who served during World War II, a contribution that improved the social status of Japanese Americans. In addition, alongside the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Yamada organized a photographic exhibition on Japanese American soldiers and held lectures on Japanese American history. Through these efforts, he promoted friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.
