Senior Advisor and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies



On July 29, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan awarded a Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Mr. Christopher B. Johnstone, senior advisor and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).


Mr. Johnston has contributed to strengthening the Japan-US relationship and alliance over a period of 25 years, taking on multiple important roles relating to East Asia, and particularly Japan, at the White House and the Department of Defense, among other institutions. In June 2022, he assumed his role as Japan Chair at CSIS and it is expected that he will continue to contribute to developing the Japan-US relationship.


The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
