On August 28, 2025 (Japan Time), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY 2025. Mr. Matthew P. Goodman is among this year’s foreign recipients. He will receive the Commendation in recognition of his outstanding contributions to promoting economic relations between Japan and the United States.


Mr. Goodman served as Senior Vice President for Economics and Simon Chair in Political Economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) from 2012 to 2023. In this role, he contributed to the promotion of economic relations between the United States and the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan. At CSIS, he conducted research on Japan-US economic relations over many years. He made significant contributions to strengthening Japan-US economic ties and fostering mutual understanding between the two countries through efforts such as publicizing the outcomes of the 2023 G7 Hiroshima Summit and participating in the publication of the “Armitage Nye” reports.


Every year, the Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
